Finding a balance between personal and professional life is a common challenge. This week I found myself trying to balance these areas by integrating mindset changes into my habits and routines. These are some of the things that help me, share your ideas in the comments.
First, assess your beliefs about work-life balance. Do you believe it’s impossible to excel in both areas simultaneously, or do you see it as achievable with the right approach? Adopting a growth-oriented mindset can help you view balance as a dynamic process rather than a fixed state.
For me, I don’t think that we can excel at both simultaneously, but I do believe that both can exist at the same time. I may focus more on work for a period of time when trying to accomplish a specific goal, but I can still make sure I give my family quality time and be responsible to my obligations to them.
Likewise, there are seasons of my life where I’ve had to recognize my family needed me more than my career did and, while I made sure to do my job well, it had to take a back seat to the needs of family. I have heard of others who are able to do both equally well, but that wasn’t my reality.
What I do in life in general is identify one or two routines that can help me achieve this balance. For instance, establish clear boundaries between work and personal time. This could mean setting specific work hours and sticking to them, or creating a designated workspace at home to mentally separate work from leisure. I mentioned on my previous blog that I had date night with my husband. At the time he was a paramedic and was gone for 24 hours at a time, so what I did with my kids was have “Girl Movie Night”, which was like date night with my girls [I had all daughters]. Just like date night, interruptions were not allowed.
Another effective routine is to prioritize self-care. Schedule regular time for activities that recharge you, whether it’s exercise, hobbies, or spending time with loved ones. This helps prevent burnout and ensures you have the energy to be present in both personal and professional spheres. This is something I was always terrible at until I realized that not giving myself time—even a 15 minutes break in my room—was making me unbearable to my family and unproductive professionally. I felt it was selfish for me to take that time, but then I realized it is just like sleep. It is something my body needs in order to function. Now that I do this, I am more pleasant to be around and do things better when I’m working.
Time management is crucial in balancing these areas. Use tools like planners or digital calendars to organize your tasks and commitments. I created The Balanced Life Planner to be a first step in this process, but if you have something that works for you already, use that. Prioritize important activities and delegate or defer less critical ones. This helps you stay focused and efficient, reducing stress and improving productivity.
Find a place to regularly track how these changes help. If you use The Balanced Life planner, use the monthly reflection page and feeling tracker. Or use a journal or habit tracker. Reflect on the changes you’ve made and their impact. Are you feeling more balanced and fulfilled? Are you able to be more present and engaged in both areas of your life? Regularly evaluating your routines can help you make necessary adjustments and maintain a healthy balance. By adopting a mindset that values balance and implementing supportive routines, you can create a more harmonious and satisfying life. Remember, balance is an ongoing process that requires continuous effort and adjustment, but the rewards are well worth it. Allow yourself to make mistakes, but keep working towards getting better and feeling better.
