Health Mindsets, habits, and routines

A healthy lifestyle is deeply intertwined with mindset, habits, and routines. Today I had the idea to focus on how to integrate mindset changes into health-promoting habits and routines. These are things I’m doing that I think will also help you, but as with nearly all change, it starts between our ears.

First, evaluate your beliefs about health and wellness. Do you view a healthy lifestyle as a chore or as a rewarding journey? Shifting your mindset to see health as a priority and a source of vitality can motivate you to adopt and maintain positive habits.

Identify one or two health-related habits you want to cultivate. Perhaps you aim to incorporate more physical activity into your daily routine. Start by setting a manageable goal, such as a 30-minute walk or a short workout each day. I do this [link] routine of 15 minutes of seated arm exercises a few times a week. Focus less on exactly what it is. Consistency is key, so choose an activity you enjoy and can sustain over time.

Another important habit could be improving your nutrition. Rather than making drastic changes, begin with small, incremental adjustments. For example, add more fruits and vegetables to your meals, reduce processed food intake, or ensure you stay hydrated throughout the day. These small changes can gradually lead to significant health improvements. I heard Darrin Hardy say recently that he loved dessert after dinner, so instead of making banana splits that were 1200 calories, he ate 2 Hershey Kisses which were 50 calories. Simple changes and substitutions can allow us to not feel deprived, but still work towards our goals.

Incorporate moments of calm to support your health journey. You can use techniques like meditation or deep-breathing exercises, but I have found just turning off everything and allowing myself a few minutes to daydream or close my eyes like I did when I was a kid and let my imagination take over. It only takes a few minutes and can help manage stress and improve mental clarity. I leave all technology in the house and go outside and walk my dog for 15 minutes, 3 times a day. That is enough to recharge me and help me stay focused during my 12 hour days. Set aside a few minutes each day for these practices, making them a regular part of your routine.

As you adopt these new habits, observe the impact on your overall well-being. Are you feeling more energetic and focused? Are you noticing improvements in your physical health? Are you starting to work through wrong mindsets that keep you held hostage? Tracking these changes can reinforce your commitment to maintaining these healthy routines.

A mindset focused on health and wellness, combined with consistent habits and routines, can lead to a more vibrant and fulfilling life. By making small, sustainable changes, you can create a lasting positive impact on your health. And if you find yourself drifting, don’t criticize, just start again. We are on a journey and creating new habits means breaking up your previous routine. Eventually it will become a new routine and you’ll be able to accomplish much more. Share your experiences and techniques you use, so we can learn together.
